2022 Joshua Tree National Park

Black-and-White Infrared Intensive Workshop

Join me for my favorite time of the year to photograph the Joshua Tree National Park landscape during the early morning waning moon. If you have never experienced night sky infrared photography in the desert with landscape lit by the moon (natural light painting), then you are in for a treat!

The early morning (after 4am) workshop start focuses on moonlit subjects and stars into sunrise. Your infrared camera will see far more stars than you can see with your eyes! I guarantee the Big Dipper, so easily seen in the night sky, will disappear into a sea of a thousand stars!

We will be shooting a variety of landscapes from the enormous palm trees at Cottonwood Springs to the amazing granite monoliths under the early morning night sky (pre-dawn). During the waning moon (first quarter to crescent moon), our early morning shoots will feature different natural light conditions each day. This workshop date was chosen to take full advantage of the moon phase for our photography.

Other spots we will visit inside the park include Barker Dam, Lost Horse Valley, Hall of Horrors, the Ocotillo Patch, and the Cholla Cactus Gardens plus a couple favorite lesser visited spots.

From using the right gear to capture and processing, this is a unique opportunity to learn how to create amazing black-and-white images.

At this workshop,

  • You will be placed in the best locations to maximize the infrared light under existing conditions.
  • You will receive individual help in the field to ensure a successful capture. Every day there will be hands-on experience in the classroom for processing your images while learning how to manage workflow.
  • Finally, you will have the opportunity to use a “loaner” external lens filter to make infrared images at no charge to you! 720nm and 850nm infrared Kolari Vision external lens filters for visible-light (“color only”) cameras will be available if you do not have your own.
