2022 Winter Oregon Southern Coast
Black-and-White Infrared Intensive Workshop
Join us January 14 – 18, 2022 for a four-and-one-half day workshop combing the southern Oregon beaches which boast some of the most dramatic scenery on the west coast. Ancient formations of towering rocks just past the tide line create interesting subjects at any time of the day.
The winter storms at sea push the waves to shore resulting in dramatic scenes at Shore Acres State Park. Combined with full moon high tides and potential storms, the conditions will give us an amazing experience as the big waves crash against the rocks. Don’t worry – we are safe on the cliffs above the shoreline.

We will be shooting a variety of landscapes at many state parks from Sunset Bay State Park to the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor, but the focus will be to catch big waves during the day at the noon time high tide. This workshop has also been timed to coincidence with low tide at sunrise and sunset, and the full moon setting in the west over the Pacific Ocean in the early morning. We will be sure to get out ahead of sunrise to take advantage of the infrared light, stars, and full moon.
The air temperatures range from a low of 40 degrees to a high of 55 degrees. No snow or ice at the coast as the climate is very temperate. The weather can change by the minute at this time of year – from sunshine, to rain showers, to sleet, and back to sun in a matter of fifteen minutes.
From using the right gear to capture and processing, this is a unique opportunity to learn how to create amazing black-and-white images.
At this workshop,
- You will be placed in the best locations to maximize the infrared light under existing conditions.
- You will receive individual help in the field to ensure a successful capture. Every day there will be hands-on experience in the classroom for processing your images while learning how to manage workflow.
- Finally, you will have the opportunity to use a “loaner” external lens filter to make infrared images at no charge to you! 720nm and 850nm infrared Kolari Vision external lens filters for visible-light (“color only”) cameras will be available if you do not have your own.
